The Registrar General of India (RGI) has announced that preparations for the 2027 Census are currently at an advanced stage. Officials have confirmed that the second phase of the Census will include the enumeration of caste for the first time since the 1931 Census. This move aims to provide a clearer picture of the country’s demographic and socio-economic landscape.
In a recent statement, the RGI underscored the significance of the upcoming Census, emphasizing the need to gather comprehensive data that reflects the diverse fabric of Indian society. The government believes that the inclusion of caste data will aid in better planning and allocation of resources, addressing inequalities and providing targeted support to marginalized communities.
The first phase of the Census, which involves the collection of basic demographic information, is underway, with extensive training programs for enumerators already in place. As the process progresses, the second phase is expected to commence shortly, focusing specifically on caste identification among the population.
Critics of caste enumeration have raised concerns about potential divisions and the politicization of caste data. However, the RGI reassured that the information will be handled sensitively and will strictly serve developmental and policy-making purposes.
As the Census approaches, the government is also gearing up to enhance its outreach efforts to ensure widespread awareness and participation. Community leaders and organizations are being encouraged to engage with local populations to facilitate a smooth enumeration process.
The successful completion of the 2027 Census will provide vital insights into India’s changing demographics, with implications for policy and governance at multiple levels. As the country grapples with national priorities, the census data is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future socio-economic framework.
