Ghana’s national football team has been facing challenges in filling key positions on the field, particularly on the defensive line. Head coach Otto Addo recently addressed the situation regarding young defender Yirenkyi, who has been deployed at right-back despite being relatively untested in that role at the international level.
In a press conference, Addo highlighted the scarcity of experienced players available for selection, saying, “We don’t have a lot of options.” This admission underscores the ongoing issues within the squad as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures. Injuries and player absences have contributed to a situation where the coaching staff must explore non-traditional solutions.
Yirenkyi, who plays for a local club, has shown promise in various positions but has primarily been utilized in the midfield and forward roles. Nonetheless, with the national team’s needs pressing, Addo pointed out that the young player has been adapting well to his new responsibilities on the right flank. “He’s putting in the work and learning every day,” Addo remarked, indicating his confidence in Yirenkyi’s ability to rise to the occasion.
The coach also acknowledged that while the tactical shift may not be ideal, it is imperative for the team to field competitive line-ups as they gear up for critical matches ahead. The reliance on less experienced players like Yirenkyi illustrates the broader challenges faced squad, prompting a call for more depth in the player pool.
As preparations intensify, fans hope that Yirenkyi’s transition to right-back will yield positive results, helping the national team to fortify their defense and perform effectively in their upcoming contests.
