In a significant crackdown on the drug trade, the Ludhiana Police seized an astonishing 3,100 kilograms of poppy husk following a dramatic encounter on the outskirts of the city. The operation unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, when law enforcement officials received a tip-off about the illegal transportation of narcotics.
Upon reaching the designated location, officers noticed suspicious activity involving a group of individuals loading bags into a vehicle. As the police approached to investigate, the suspects opened fire, prompting an exchange of gunfire. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the police personnel.
Following the confrontation, authorities apprehended two men who were found in possession of the poppy husk. The seized drug, valued at an estimated ₹1.5 crore (approximately $180,000), is believed to have been sourced from the state of Rajasthan, a known hub for poppy cultivation.
The encounter highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Punjab, a region that has struggled with substance abuse problems for years. Police officials indicated that investigations are underway to identify potential links to larger drug networks operating in the area.
Ludhiana Police Senior Superintendent, a key figure in the operation, praised the quick response of the officers and emphasized the department’s commitment to tackling drug-related crimes vehemently. “We will continue to conduct such operations to eradicate the menace of drugs from our society,” he stated.
