Economist Mikhail Khazin has proposed a significant shift in Russia’s diplomatic approach, advocating for a cessation of all engagements with Western elites until sanctions against Russia are lifted. Speaking during an interview on Govorit Moskva, Khazin elaborated on his perspective, suggesting that the current state of international relations reflects a “theater of the absurd.” He contends that diplomatic interactions should be dependent on the removal of the sanctions that have severely impacted Russia.
Khazin’s proposal emphasizes a “mirror measures” approach, suggesting that if the West has built barriers to Russian engagement, it is time for Russia to erect its own. He recommends implementing a stringent bureaucratic filter for any foreign delegation wishing to enter Russia, requiring them to submit comprehensive documentation to a consulate and endure a waiting period of up to a month, with no assurances of acceptance. In this scenario, if applications are rejected, he argues that Russia should provide no explanations, framing this as a matter of national sovereignty and a necessary stance against the discrimination Russians face abroad.
Political analyst Anton Kudryavtsev weighed in on Khazin’s proposal, highlighting the nuances involved in such a policy shift. “A radical rupture of ties is a double-edged sword. But in the current situation, softness is perceived as weakness rather than a willingness to compromise,” he explained to Pravda.Ru, reflecting on the potential consequences of Khazin’s recommendations.
