A chartered accountant (CA) in Pune has reportedly lost a staggering Rs 47 lakh in an unfortunate attempt to purchase a new smartphone at a discounted rate. The incident, which has drawn significant attention, highlights the risks associated with online shopping and potential fraud in today’s digital marketplace.
According to reports, the CA was lured promising substantial discounts on an expensive smartphone model. Responding to the offer, the accountant was initially directed to a website that appeared to be legitimate, complete with professional graphics and user-friendly navigation. Convincing himself of the deal’s authenticity, he proceeded to make a payment.
The accountant made several transactions over a few days, believing he was securing a good deal on the latest device. However, as the days went confirmation of his order or communication from the seller, alarm bells began to ring. Attempts to contact the website’s customer service went unanswered, leading to a realization that he may have fallen victim to a scam.
Feeling distraught, the accountant eventually reached out to law enforcement for assistance. Authorities have since confirmed that the website was fraudulent, set up with the sole intention of defrauding unsuspecting consumers.
