This update comes just a day after the party’s National Convention held in Abuja, where key positions were contested. According to the latest information on INEC’s site, Abdulrahman Mohammed is confirmed as the National Chairman, with Samuel Anyanwu serving as the National Secretary.
This swift acknowledgment from INEC has solidified the Wike-backed faction of the PDP, which has been embroiled in internal disputes over party leadership. The recognition marks a significant turning point for the party as it prepares for upcoming elections and navigates through its internal challenges.
However, dissent has emerged from factions within the party, notably from the camp of former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, represented , Mohammed Turaki. Turaki has strongly denounced the recent convention, claiming it was held without due process and asserting that it is, therefore, illegal. He argues that the convention lacked the necessary approval and legitimacy required ’s constitution and electoral regulations.
The ongoing conflict has raised questions about the future unity of the PDP as it faces critical electoral challenges ahead. Turaki’s faction continues to resist the authority of the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership, hinting at a potentially protracted struggle for control within the party.
As the PDP grapples with these internal divisions, observers are keenly watching how it will impact its strategies and performance in the approaching electoral contests. The party’s ability to present a united front remains crucial if it aims to reclaim its influence in the political landscape of Nigeria.
