In a captivating exploration of memory and nature, the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) presents “Rodoreda, a Forest,” an immersive exhibition that invites visitors to delve into the literary universe of renowned Catalan author Mercè Rodoreda. Through this innovative installation, the audience is transported to the early 20th century, where the vibrant streets and private gardens of Barcelona serve as a backdrop for themes of nostalgia, love, and loss that permeate Rodoreda’s work.
The journey begins with a prologue titled “The Planting,” where the setting is elegantly established: Barcelona in the early 1900s. A young girl peers from atop the Casal Gurguí, a quaint tower perched on the ancient street of Sant Antoni, situated in what is now the neighbourhood of Sant Gervasi. Clutching the railing, she gazes down at the sprawling cityscape, her imagination ignited and sounds that envelop her. This moment captures the essence of curiosity that defines youth, as she dreams of the forest that exists both in her mind and in the pages of the stories that chronicle her surroundings.
As visitors navigate the exhibition, they are led through a series of interconnected spaces that mimic a forest’s layered environment.
