FIFA president Gianni Infantino reaffirmed on Tuesday that Iran will indeed participate in the upcoming World Cup, despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking to AFP during halftime of a friendly match where Iran triumphed over Costa Rica with a resounding 5-0 victory in Antalya, Turkey, Infantino expressed confidence in Iran’s footballing prowess.
“Iran will be at the World Cup,” Infantino stated emphatically, highlighting his pleasure in the team’s performance. “We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, and I’m very happy.” His unexpected presence at the match allowed him to engage directly with both players and the coaching staff, reinforcing his support for the team.
Infantino elaborated that Iran’s matches will proceed as scheduled, insisting that they will take place in the locations designated ’s draw. The World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted States, Mexico, and Canada, kicks off on June 11.
Iran is slated to begin its Group G campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium on June 21, and concluding with a game against Egypt in Seattle on June 27. Despite concerns regarding the geopolitical situation, particularly the ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel that escalated on February 28, Infantino emphasized that the most critical aspect is the tournament moving forward as planned.
As anticipation builds for the World Cup, the announcement seeks to reassure fans and players alike that the competition will showcase all participating nations, including Iran, in a commendable display of international unity through sports.
