The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) to investigate the feasibility of establishing a dense plantation at its ash disposal site. This decision comes in light of environmental concerns associated with the disposal of ash generated from thermal power plants, which can have detrimental effects on local ecosystems and public health.

The NGT’s directive aims to mitigate the environmental impact caused , which often leads to soil and water contamination. The tribunal emphasized the importance of transforming these sites into green areas through afforestation, thus enhancing biodiversity while addressing pollution concerns.

In its order, the NGT has urged HPGCL to formulate a comprehensive plan that outlines the methods and species of plants suitable for this initiative. The tribunal highlighted that the implementation of dense plantations could not only utilize the otherwise barren ash disposal areas but also contribute to carbon sequestration efforts and improve air quality in the region.

Environmental experts welcomed the NGT’s directive, stating that such initiatives are vital in combating the long-term effects of industrial waste. They called for immediate action and monitoring to ensure successful execution of the plantation project, emphasizing that ongoing maintenance and community involvement would be essential for its sustainability.

As the state grapples with the challenges posed thermal power operations, the NGT’s call to action reflects a broader recognition of the need for environmentally responsible practices in energy production. The initiative to explore dense plantations at ash disposal sites is seen as a critical step toward fostering a more sustainable future for Haryana.
