A former gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in Kano State for the 2023 elections, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s alleged efforts to reshape the political landscape of Kano into a one-party state. Yakasai characterized this initiative as a critical miscalculation that will not succeed.
In a recent statement, Yakasai argued that the move to centralize power and suppress multiple political voices in Kano is fundamentally flawed. He expressed concern that such an approach undermines the democratic principles that allow for diverse representation and competition among various political entities.
Yakasai, who previously served as a media aide to Dr. Abdullahi Adamu, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressed that Kano has a long-standing tradition of political pluralism. He emphasized that the people of Kano are politically conscious and will not easily accept any attempts to stifle democracy in favor of a single-party system.
Furthermore, he called upon citizens and political stakeholders in the state to remain vigilant against any actions that might threaten the democratic process. Yakasai encouraged political parties to continue working independently to represent the interests of their constituents and to participate actively in the political discourse of the state.
The concern raised broader apprehensions among political analysts and observers about the potential implications of a diminishing multi-party system in Nigeria, especially in a state as pivotal as Kano. As tensions rise around these political maneuvers, the coming months will be critical in determining the state’s political trajectory and the response from its electorate.
