Unification minister asks EU to mediate ‘2+1’ dialogue with N. Korea

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young on Wednesday asked the European Union to mediate a “2+1” dialogue involving South Korea, the United States, and North Korea. This request comes amid ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula and a stalling in diplomatic efforts.

During a press briefing, Chung emphasized the importance of engaging the EU as a neutral party to facilitate discussions aimed at reducing tensions and promoting peace. He pointed out that the EU has a history of playing a constructive role in international dialogues and could leverage its diplomatic channels to encourage North Korea to return to the negotiating table.

Chung’s proposal for a “2+1” format involves direct talks between the two Koreas, with the United States as a supporting partner. This approach is seen as a way to address North Korea’s security concerns while also supporting South Korea’s commitment to denuclearization on the peninsula.

The minister acknowledged that the current situation remains complex, with North Korea continuing to pursue its nuclear and missile programs despite international sanctions. Nonetheless, he expressed hope that this initiative could pave the way for a new dialogue framework.

Chung also called for cooperation among the international community to advocate for peace and stability in the region. He highlighted that engagement is essential, even in a challenging context, to find a common ground that might lead to constructive outcomes.

The EU has not yet publicly responded to Chung’s request. However, previous discussions among European leaders have indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue concerning North Korea, reinforcing the notion that multilateral cooperation is crucial for addressing the longstanding issues on the Korean Peninsula.
