The international governing body for athletics has officially lifted all doping-related sanctions imposed on Russia’s athletics federation, marking a significant step toward restoring its status on the global stage.
The Council of World Athletics has announced the end of its three-year external monitoring of the All-Russia Athletics Federation (RusAF), concluding that the organization has fulfilled all necessary conditions under its special compliance program. This decision signals a new chapter for Russian athletics, which has faced severe scrutiny and restrictions since the onset of doping scandals that plagued the sport in recent years.
Mikhail Degtyarev, Russia’s Minister of Sport and head of the Russian Olympic Committee, confirmed the decision, highlighting that the federation had successfully completed all 34 strategic and operational requirements set forth Athletics Council. He noted that prominent changes had been executed, including the implementation of new governance standards, a comprehensive overhaul of anti-doping systems, and modernization of regional structures.
Degtyarev expressed optimism about the future of Russian athletics, stating, “This is a landmark accomplishment for us. The reforms put in place signal our commitment to fair play and integrity within the sport.” He further added that these changes would ensure that athletes from Russia can compete on international platforms with restored credibility and pride.
