The central government has announced a significant increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for jute, a move that is set to substantially benefit farmers in West Bengal and Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that this decision aims to enhance both the production and quality of jute, while also ensuring a substantial increase in farmers’ income.
The MSP for jute has been raised to ₹4,600 per quintal for the 2023-24 season, marking an increase of ₹400 from the previous year. This increment is expected to provide a much-needed financial cushion for jute farmers, who have faced challenges in recent years due to fluctuating market prices and rising production costs.
West Bengal and Assam are two of the largest producers of jute in India, and the enhanced MSP is likely to incentivize farmers to cultivate more jute, optimizing the utilization of available arable land. The government’s initiative is designed to encourage sustainable farming practices and promote the overall economic growth of rural communities dependent on jute production.
In his address, Modi asserted that the decision aligns with the government’s broader goal of enhancing the income of farmers. “ MSP for jute, we are not only boosting production but also ensuring that our farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work. It is our responsibility to support them and improve their livelihood,” he stated.
Farmers and agricultural experts have welcomed the government’s decision, viewing it as a progressive step toward improving the viability of jute farming. The increased MSP is anticipated to alleviate some of the financial pressures currently faced , enabling them to invest in better seeds, equipment, and farming techniques.
In addition, the rise in jute MSP is expected to positively impact the jute industry as a whole, as it could lead to higher quality raw materials and potentially improve the rejection rates of inferior products in the market. This is likely to attract more investments and advancements in jute processing and value-added sectors.
