If you do not wash your hairbrush at least once a week, a huge number of bacteria, sebum residue, dust, and dead skin particles accumulate on its bristles. According to research, in such a short time, up to a million microorganisms can form on the surface of a hairbrush, including bacteria that cause inflammation and acne, warns trichologist and dermatovenereologist Yulia Markova.
Markova explained that sebum, produced glands, serves as a nutrient medium for bacteria. When it mixes with dust and dead skin cells, it forms clumps that clog pores. “Indeed, a hairbrush can become dirtier than a toilet seat — this is a fair statement,” she noted.
This surprising revelation highlights the importance of maintaining proper hygiene not just for the scalp and hair, but also for the tools we use to care for them. Hairbrushes, often overlooked in regular cleaning routines, can harbor harmful microorganisms that may lead to skin issues and other health concerns.
Regularly cleaning hairbrushes can help prevent the buildup of bacteria. Experts recommend rinsing them under hot water to remove residual hair and debris, followed by a gentle wash with soap or shampoo. Soaking the brush in an antibacterial solution can further ensure its cleanliness.
As our understanding of hygiene evolves, it’s clear that everyday items like hairbrushes deserve more attention. Taking just a few minutes each week to care for this common grooming tool can make a significant difference in promoting a healthy scalp and clearer skin. Ignoring this essential task could lead you to unknowingly subject yourself to a more unsanitary grooming habit than you might realize.
