Dilma Rousseff is a prominent Brazilian politician who served as the 36th president of Brazil from 2011 until her impeachment in 2016. Born on December 14, 1947, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, she grew up in a politically active family. Rousseff’s early involvement in politics was significantly influenced to Brazil’s military dictatorship during the late 1960s, which led to her imprisonment for nearly three years.
Before her presidency, Rousseff held various government positions, including Minister of Mines and Energy from 2007 to 2009 and Chief of Staff under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from 2009 until 2010. She was elected as the first female president of Brazil in October 2010, succeeding Lula, and was re-elected for a second term in 2014.
Rousseff’s presidency focused on social programs aimed at reducing poverty and increasing access to education and healthcare. However, she faced significant challenges during her second term, including an economic downturn and widespread protests against her government.
In 2016, Rousseff faced impeachment proceedings related to accusations of fiscal mismanagement, specifically the manipulation of budgetary accounts to hide the deficit. The process culminated in her impeachment Senate, which took place on August 31, 2016, resulting in her removal from office.
Since leaving the presidency, Rousseff has remained active in politics and has continued to advocate for social justice and progressive policies. Her legacy is marked role as Brazil’s first female leader and her efforts to promote economic growth and social equity during her time in office.
