Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, has put forth a strong case for the inclusion of kho kho in future multi-sport events, notably the Asian Games and the 2036 Olympics. His remarks follow the successful hosting of the Kho Kho World Cup, which showcased the growing popularity of the traditional Indian sport and highlighted the talent of its players.

“We did a splendid job of organising the Kho Kho World Cup and we need to make an effort that these players get a chance to play at the Asian Games,” Mandaviya stated during a recent event. He emphasized the need to promote indigenous sports on international platforms, arguing that kho kho not only represents India’s rich cultural heritage but also has the potential to engage audiences worldwide.

Kho kho, a tag game that originated in India, requires both speed and strategy, and has been gaining traction among youth across the country. Mandaviya’s push for its inclusion is seen as part of a broader initiative to encourage traditional sports and provide opportunities for athletes in disciplines that are often overshadowed recognized sports.

In preparation for potential international participation, the Minister urged stakeholders, including sports federations and government bodies, to rally together in promoting kho kho at grassroots and institutional levels. “We must ensure that our players are well-prepared and that our infrastructure supports their training and development,” he added.

The move to advocate for kho kho’s inclusion in the Asian Games and Olympic framework aligns with a global trend of recognizing and incorporating traditional sports into major sporting events. Mandaviya’s vision aims not only to elevate kho kho but also to inspire a new generation of athletes and enthusiasts who can carry forward the legacy of this unique sport.

As discussions around the inclusion of kho kho continue, supporters are hopeful that with collaborative efforts, this traditional game will soon grace the competitive arenas of prestigious international sporting events.
