Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant stop in Assam’s Dibrugarh district as he joined women tea pluckers in the lush green tea gardens, calling the experience “very memorable.” The event highlighted the importance of Assam’s tea industry, which not only contributes significantly to the local and national economy but also employs more than 684,000 workers, many of whom are women.
During his visit, Modi underscored the role of tea cultivation in the state’s economic landscape, where the industry produces between 650 to 700 million kilograms of tea annually. The Prime Minister’s participation in tea plucking was symbolic, aiming to foster a connection with the working women of Assam and to affirm his government’s commitment to their rights and empowerment.
As part of his ongoing campaign efforts, Modi reiterated promises made to uphold tribal traditions and enhance women’s rights. He emphasized the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) dedication to the development of Assam, which includes implementing a Uniform Civil Code aimed at ensuring greater equality among diverse communities.
The visit is viewed as a strategic move ahead of upcoming elections, where the BJP aims to solidify its relationship with the electorate commitment to local culture and economic welfare. Prime Minister Modi’s interactions with the tea pluckers revealed an attempt to resonate with the grassroots, potentially reinforcing longstanding ties between the party and the people of Assam.
Through this initiative, the Prime Minister’s message is clear: the well-being of women and the preservation of regional heritage are at the forefront of his administration’s agenda. As Assam’s tea industry continues to be a pillar of the state’s economy, Modi’s engagement with its workers seeks to build a foundation of support and advocacy for their rights and livelihoods.
