India’s women’s hockey team is under the spotlight as they prepare for the ongoing FIH Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, with head coach Sjoerd Marijne emphasizing the need for improvement in their performance. Following a recent match against Scotland, where the host nation dropped crucial points, Marijne addressed the media, highlighting the team’s struggles in converting penalty corner opportunities into goals.
The coach pointed out that the team’s inability to score more frequently from penalty corners not only impacts their chances of winning but also puts additional pressure on the players to perform under pressure. “We need to be more clinical in front of the goal,” Marijne stated. “If we can make use of the opportunities we create, we can truly kill the matches and secure our position in the tournament.”
Marijne, who is in his second stint with the Indian women’s team, reflected on the gradual adaptation of the players to his strategic style of play. He expressed confidence in the team’s potential to improve, despite the setbacks. “Every match is a learning experience,” he mentioned. “We have been working on our techniques and strategies, and I can already see positive changes on the field.”
The coach’s emphasis on enhancing performance comes in the context of a competitive qualifying round, where every goal counts. Marijne urged his players to maintain focus and capitalize on every scoring opportunity. “It’s essential that we develop a killer instinct,” he stressed. “We have the talent, but it’s about converting that talent into results.”
As the qualifiers progress, all eyes will be on the Indian team to see if they can rise to the occasion and fulfill Marijne’s vision for a more dominant and effective presence on the pitch. With the right adjustments and a commitment to improvement, the team aims to secure their place in the World Cup and make a mark on the international stage.
