The second season of ‘One Piece’ had managed to hold the title of the number one English-language series on Netflix for three consecutive weeks, but it has now been dethroned. The cause? The remarkable reception of season three of ‘XO, Kitty,’ which has amassed 12.9 million views within just four days of its release, reaching the number one spot in 77 countries.
Premiering on April 2, the third season of ‘XO, Kitty’ has actually experienced slightly lower viewership numbers compared to its predecessors. Both the first and second seasons of the series debuted with identical figures of 14.2 million views in their first four days.
Despite this drop in numbers, ‘XO, Kitty’ is still performing well as it is not an especially costly series to produce. Significantly, the audience retention rate indicates that a high percentage of viewers start and finish the series, which is typically unusual as shows usually see a decline in viewership over their seasons. All signs suggest that Netflix executives are very pleased with the show’s performance.
Upcoming viewership data will be crucial; the first season exited the Top 10 with 35.4 million views over four weeks, while the second season had 27.1 million views in three weeks. As of now, there are no doubts regarding the show’s future on Netflix.
In fact, the core question is no longer whether the show will be renewed for a fourth season, but rather when that announcement will come. Showrunner Valentina Garza has emphasized that season three serves as the conclusion of one chapter for ‘XO, Kitty’ and noted that it is “absolutely the beginning of a journey with all that they have learned,” hinting that there are “many more milestones in their relationship that they could reach.”
