A spectacular year for Eduard Fernández unfolds in 2024 as he takes on a challenging role in “Marco.” The two characters he portrays are remarkably different, yet he navigates them with astonishing credibility. I remember the discovery—almost his debut—of this actor on the big screen in “Los lobos de Washington.” Even then, professional critics and discerning fans sensed that an extraordinary performer had arrived in our cinema, and they were right.
Fernández has excelled in every role he has taken on, regardless of whether the films as a whole have fared better or worse. A look through titles such as “Smoking Room,” “En la ciudad,” “El método,” “Ficció,” “Alatriste,” “Tres días con la familia,” “Biutiful,” “Pa Negre,” “El niño,” “El hombre de las mil caras,” “Perfectos desconocidos,” “Todos lo saben,” and “Los renglones torcidos de Dios,” in addition to his 2024 projects, reveals the actor’s versatility. He requires minimal prosthetics to immerse himself in a character, transforming it into something magnetic.
“Marco” is the ultimate expression of that talent. A few extra pounds, a new hairstyle, a dye job, a mustache, and age makeup are all it takes for audiences to be captivated ández’s performance. He draws you in from the very first moment and doesn’t let go until the end. The story of the caught simulator is presented in its best possible light thanks to this other simulator, whose truth stems from the essential lies of acting. That’s why the full title of the film is “Marco, la verdad inventada” or “Marco, the invented truth.”
It is yet another marvel from Fernández, along with directors Garaño and Arregui, the creators of “Loreak,” “Handía,” and “La trinchera infinita.” May Eduard’s winning streak continue.
