The Arts Council Korea (ARKO) is set to host a remarkable event titled “A Conversation with the Author,” featuring renowned Austrian children’s author Heinz Janisch. This event marks a significant highlight of ARKO’s 2026 Literature Residency Support Program and comes on the heels of Janisch being awarded the prestigious 2024 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
Heinz Janisch has established himself as a pivotal figure in Austrian children’s literature, celebrated for his unique blend of poetic and philosophical writing that captivates both young audiences and adults alike. Throughout his illustrious career, he has received numerous accolades, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Christine Nostlinger Prize in 2024, the German Academy for Children’s and Young Adult Literature Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, and the BolognaRagazzi Award in 2006. His latest publication, The Last Gift of Andersen (2026), looks at the life and literary contributions of Hans Christian Andersen, and has recently been translated into Korean.
During his month-long residency in Korea, Janisch will be based on the scenic Nami Island as well as in Seoul, where he will continue his writing endeavors. He is also slated to participate in discussions and meetings with Korean children’s authors, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and cultural perspectives.
In addition to his scheduled activities, Janisch plans to delve into traditional Korean folktales, drawing inspiration for new creative works. This commitment to exploring local narratives demonstrates his desire to intertwine his literary vision with the rich tapestry of Korean culture, further enhancing the cultural dialogue between Austria and Korea.
As the event approaches, anticipation builds for Janisch’s insights and inspiration, promising an engaging experience for literature enthusiasts and aspiring writers alike.
