A shocking incident occurred late Saturday evening in downtown, where a drunk driver allegedly dragged a local shopkeeper along the bonnet of his vehicle after attempting to flee the scene of a minor collision. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the driver accelerated away, leaving the victim clinging to the front of the car.
The confrontation began around 10 p.m. when the driver, a 34-year-old man, collided with the shopkeeper’s stall outside a popular corner store. Reports indicate that the shopkeeper, a 50-year-old father of three, had stepped outside to assess the damage when the driver, apparently intoxicated, sped off without exchanging information or checking on the damage. In a desperate attempt to stop the driver, the shopkeeper grabbed hold of the car’s bonnet.
Witnesses reported that the driver drove at speeds estimated to be between 30 and 40 miles per hour, with the shopkeeper struggling to maintain his grip. As the vehicle went through near, pedestrians were left stunned, some capturing the event on their phones. One witness recounted, “It all happened so fast. We were shocked. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. He was just hanging on and begging him to stop.”
The harrowing ordeal finally came to an end when the driver lost control and crashed into a parked vehicle several blocks away. The impact sent the vehicle spinning, resulting in additional property damage and leaving the driver seriously injured. Emergency services arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, attending to both the shopkeeper, who suffered minor injuries, and the driver, who was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
Local authorities arrested the driver on multiple charges, including DUI, reckless endangerment, and assault. Investigators have since confirmed that the driver had a blood alcohol concentration well over the legal limit, raising serious concerns about public safety.
The shopkeeper was treated for his injuries and released later that night. Friends and family of the victim have expressed immense relief that he is safe, although they are deeply shaken of the night. “He is a good man, always looking out for the community. It’s a miracle he’s okay,” said a family member.
This incident has sparked discussions within the community about the ongoing issue of drunk driving and the need for greater safety measures. Advocacy groups are calling for stricter penalties for offenders and increased public awareness campaigns about the dangers of operating a vehicle under the influence.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, with residents uniting in support of the injured shopkeeper and demanding accountability for reckless behavior on the roads.
