A surfer who experienced a terrifying shark bite off the coast of California has bravely spoken out about the incident. James Eastman, a seasoned surfer with a passion for the ocean, was attacked while riding waves near Santa Monica on Sunday morning.
In a video shared on social media, Eastman recounted the frightening moments leading up to the incident. “I was just enjoying my morning surf when I felt a sudden jolt,” he said. “At first, I thought it was a wave, but then I realized something had grabbed me.”
The bite caused significant injury to his leg, but Eastman managed to swim back to shore despite the pain and shock. “I knew I had to get out of the water. The adrenaline kicked in, and I just kept swimming,” he explained. Bystanders quickly came to his aid, applying pressure to his wounds and calling for medical assistance.
Local authorities have since confirmed that the shark involved in the incident was a juvenile great white, a species that is rarely aggressive towards humans. Experts suggest that the shark may have bitten Eastman out of curiosity rather than intent to harm.
Eastman expressed gratitude for the swift response of those who helped him. “I’m lucky to be alive, and I owe my life to the people on the beach who were there for me,” he said. “It’s a reminder that we are guests in their territory.”
As Eastman begins his recovery, he hopes to return to the ocean, albeit with a newfound respect for its inhabitants. “I love surfing, and I don’t want this incident to scare me away. It’s part of nature, and we need to coexist,” he noted.
