Rockstar Games has confirmed that it was the victim of a third-party data breach attributed to the hacking group ShinyHunters. The group, known for targeting major corporations, claims to have accessed Rockstar’s cloud servers and has threatened to leak sensitive data if the company fails to meet their demands 14.
ShinyHunters issued a statement warning Rockstar to either “pay or leak,” although they did not specify the exact nature of the data obtained. Rockstar acknowledged that a “limited amount of non-material company information” was accessed but asserted that the breach had “no impact on our organization or our players.”
This incident follows a significant attack last year that resulted in the leak of gameplay footage and assets for the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. One of the perpetrators from that incident, part of the Lapsus$ hacking group, was sentenced to indefinite hospitalization.
As the gaming community remains alert, the implications of this latest breach could affect Rockstar’s ongoing operations and its reputation in the gaming industry. The company is likely to increase security measures to prevent future incidents and reassess its data protection strategies in light of these developments.
