Altilium, a UK-based clean technology startup, has been at the forefront of innovation in sustainable energy solutions. The company has focused on developing processes for recycling electric vehicle batteries, a crucial area as the automotive industry shifts towards electrification.
Recent advancements in EV technology have heightened the demand for effective recycling methods. With a significant grant of £18.5 million from the government’s DRIVE35 Scale-Up Fund, Altilium aims to establish ACT3, the nation’s first commercial refinery dedicated to recovering essential minerals from old EV batteries in Plymouth, Devon.
The facility is set to process up to 24,000 batteries annually utilizing Altilium’s proprietary EcoCathode™ technology. This innovative method promises to significantly enhance the efficiency of mineral recovery, reducing reliance on raw material extraction and addressing environmental concerns linked to battery disposal.
The impact of ACT3 is expected to be considerable. Not only will it create jobs in the local community, but it will also contribute to the UK’s goal of sustainability in the automotive sector. As electric vehicle adoption accelerates, the refinery positions Altilium as a leading player in the circular economy for battery materials.
