Roblox has been a popular platform for kids and teens, boasting 144 million daily active users. Traditionally, the platform allowed users of all ages to interact and access games without strict age segregation. However, concerns over child safety and exposure to inappropriate content have prompted a significant re-evaluation of its policies.
The gaming giant is now implementing restricted accounts for younger users, dividing them into Kids accounts for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select accounts for users aged 9 to 15. Age verification will be mandatory for users who wish to access certain features, including chat functionality, marking a significant shift in how the platform operates.
Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, indicated that this transition aims to inform existing users about the new age-check process. While it is not necessary for younger users who do not wish to chat and are satisfied with the age-appropriate games, those opting for enhanced features will need to undergo verification.
This latest update follows scrutiny from lawsuits and public outcry regarding child safety on the platform. With the introduction of these age-specific accounts, Roblox believes it can create a safer environment for its users and foster a more civil communication landscape among peers.
