Google has expanded its AI ambitions with the release of a native Gemini app for Mac. This initiative follows closely on the heels of a similar rollout for Windows. The tech giant aims to integrate its advanced AI assistant into desktop environments, making it more accessible for users.
The new macOS Gemini app enables users to engage with the AI assistant through keyboard shortcuts. , pressing Option and Space opens a mini chat, while a combination of Option, Shift, and Space unlocks the full chat experience. These settings can be adjusted in the app, allowing for a more tailored user experience.
Users can share content directly from their screen with the AI, including files and full web pages. The app also supports image and video generation, enhancing its utility for creative tasks. Compatible with macOS 15 and later, the Gemini app aims to provide a comprehensive desktop assistant experience.
Michael Friedman, the product manager for Gemini, emphasized the vision behind the app as a foundation for a “truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant.” This development comes amid anticipation for Apple’s Siri overhaul, which will also incorporate Gemini’s capabilities, marking a significant competitive landscape shift in AI desktop assistants.
