The deployment of high-energy laser weapons on U.S. soil is becoming a reality as the military seeks innovative solutions against low-cost weaponized drones. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved new safety measures for laser systems designed to counter unauthorized drone activities, most notably along the U.S.-Mexico border. This marks a significant shift in air defense strategy for the U.S. military.
Recent incidents involving laser weapons prompted this landmark safety agreement. In February, airspace over Texas was briefly shut down after the U.S. Army deployed the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) against an unidentified target. A second incident involving a drone owned Border Protection led to further discussions on operational safety and the necessity of guidelines for using lasers in civilian airspace.
The FAA’s assessment concluded that the laser systems pose no undue risk to passenger aircraft, based on thorough testing. Officials confirmed that advanced safety protocols prevent the laser from firing unless all safety checks are satisfied. This agreement sets a precedent for employing laser technology as a countermeasure against the proliferation of drones, an increasing threat to national security.
However, while this agreement is a crucial step towards establishing a domestic defense architecture, significant challenges remain. Questions about jurisdiction and operational command persist, which could complicate future laser engagements. As the military explores further uses for laser weapons, the effectiveness and safety of these systems will be paramount in shaping America’s defense strategies.
