Meta’s platforms have long been a staple for teens, offering a mix of social networking and entertainment. However, growing concerns about online safety have pushed various countries to implement social media bans for children. In response to these pressures, Meta is adopting new strategies to reassure parents about their teens’ use of its services.
The company announced a new feature that allows parents to view the topics their teens have discussed with Meta AI over the past week. These topics range from academics to wellness, enabling parents to gain insights into their children’s interests and concerns. Parents can access this feature via an Insights tab integrated within Meta’s supervision tools.
To enhance this initiative, Meta collaborated with the Cyberbullying Research Center to create “conversation starters” for parents. These resources are designed to facilitate discussions about AI interactions and are accessible through the Family Center website. Additionally, the company has formed an AI Wellbeing Expert Council to guide its policies and practices related to teen interactions with AI.
Despite these proactive measures, many remain skeptical about AI’s impact on young users, especially in light of recent incidents involving AI-related harm. Countries like Spain continue to enforce strict regulations on social media use for minors, pointing to the urgent need for safe online environments. Meta’s efforts might alleviate some parental concerns, but the broader risks associated with AI still loom large in the public eye.
