OpenAI launched GPT-5.5, heralding a significant upgrade in its AI capabilities. The new system promises to enhance Codex, the company’s powerful coding agent, transforming how developers and researchers engage with technology. The release marks a departure from previous iterations, which were already formidable but now face intensified competition.
This latest version offers notable improvements in autonomy and performance. OpenAI reports that GPT-5.5 can tackle complex, multi-step tasks without requiring human oversight. In its blog, the company highlighted advancements in scientific research, noting the AI’s ability to generate and test novel hypotheses with greater efficiency.
Performance metrics illustrate this upgrade vividly. GPT-5.5 achieved an impressive score of 82.7% on the Terminal-Bench 2.0 benchmark, outperforming its predecessor by 7.6%. The model also demonstrated a superior understanding of coding tasks, resolving 58.6% of GitHub issues in a single pass, according to the SWE-Bench Pro metrics.
The rollout of GPT-5.5 also comes amidst rising user demand; approximately 4 million developers now utilize Codex weekly. OpenAI’s CEO, Greg Brockman, expressed confidence in the model’s ability to function with the judgment of an experienced software engineer, heightening expectations throughout the industry as competition with Anthropic intensifies.
