In an age where artificial intelligence is increasingly prevalent, most individuals continue to assume that personal text messages come from a human author. A recent study involving over 1,300 participants aimed to explore this disconnect, highlighting that many users do not even consider AI as a potential source when communicating through text.
The research, conducted and Andras Molnar, presented various groups with AI-generated messages, such as apologies. While some participants were informed of the authorship, others evaluated the messages without context, leading to surprising results about judgment based on perceived authorship.
The findings revealed a marked “AI disclosure penalty.” When aware that a message was AI-generated, participants offered notably negative assessments of the sender. Conversely, those without guidance formed impressions as positive as those directed towards genuine human authors, with no skepticism present.
This lack of awareness highlights significant implications for personal relationships and professional interactions. As people increasingly rely on text for communication, the inability to discern AI-generated messages may devalue authenticity in conversations and reshape social judgments, raising ethical concerns about the use of AI in personal contexts.
