Colin Angle, co-founder of iRobot, is shifting gears from vacuum robots to interactive companions. His new venture, Familiar Machines & Magic, introduces a four-legged robot called the Familiar. Designed to mimic pet behavior, it aims to redefine home companionship.
Angle showcased the prototype at a recent tech conference, emphasizing its unique design. The Familiar avoids traditional animal forms, focusing instead on an inviting shape that encourages human interaction. This allows the robot to appeal to users’ emotional needs without competing with actual pets.
The Familiar uses advanced AI technology to understand and adapt to its owner’s behavior. It can respond with lifelike sounds and engage in playful interactions. Angle noted that the technology only recently became feasible, thanks to improvements in generative AI.
This development addresses a growing market for non-traditional pets. Angle sees particular potential among older adults who wish for companionship without the responsibilities of caring for live animals. The Familiar could offer users emotional support, reshaping how society views robotic integrations in daily life.
