Meta has long allowed users aged 13 and older to join Instagram and Facebook. However, the company faces ongoing challenges in verifying user ages, leading to concerns about underage account creation.
To address this issue, Meta is deploying artificial intelligence to analyze users’ photos and videos. The technology focuses on physical attributes such as height and bone structure to identify and remove profiles belonging to those under the age of 13.
This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to enhance online safety and comply with regulations regarding children’s online privacy. Reports indicate that the AI scans images during uploads to assess whether users meet the age requirement legitimately.
The move has raised both support and skepticism among parents and privacy advocates. While some believe it could provide much-needed protections, others express concerns over potential inaccuracies and surveillance implications.
