Instructure Data Breach Affects Thousands of Schools

Published on May 8, 2026

Recently, educational institutions relied heavily on Instructure’s Canvas platform for online learning management. This system was integral to student engagement and administrative processes during and after the pandemic.

A new wave of cyberattacks disrupted this routine. Hackers claimed to have stolen data from nearly 9,000 schools and threatened to lock students out of the Canvas platform unless their demands are met 12.

Instructure has not confirmed the breach but is investigating the claims. The hackers allege to possess sensitive information, which raises concerns about the security measures in place to protect student and institutional data.

The ramifications of this attack could be severe. Students may experience loss of access to important educational resources, and schools could face legal consequences. Trust in digital learning platforms may wane as institutions scramble to enhance cybersecurity protocols.
