Wordle, the beloved five-letter word puzzle that captivated millions, has entered a new phase. Originally created as a gift for his partner, it garnered a massive following after launching in 2021. The game quickly became a daily ritual for players across the country, fostering a dedicated online community.
Now, NBC is taking Wordle mainstream into a television game show, with Savannah Guthrie as the host. This transition marks a significant shift for the game, with NBC partnering with Jimmy Fallon and The New York Times to produce the series, set to premiere in 2027.
Contestants will compete in teams of three, applying through a dedicated website. To showcase their Wordle skills, they must include their game statistics during the application process. The show aims to retain the essence of the original game while introducing elements of speed and competition.
The decision to create a game show arises from Wordle’s substantial cultural impact. “This series is a natural extension of NBC’s legacy in the game show space,” said Sharon Vuong from NBC. With millions of players engaged weekly, this new format promises to elevate the Wordle experience beyond its digital roots, potentially attracting even more fans.
