Texas Startup Develops Artificial Egg Technology to Aid Bird Conservation

A flock of chickens near Dallas is now hatching from 3D-printed artificial eggs, thanks to Colossal Biosciences. The startup, known for its ambitious goal of de-extincting species like the wooly mammoth, is now focusing on developing technology to replicate natural egg conditions.

The company has introduced a system designed to function like a traditional egg. Its ambition extends to reviving the giant moa, an extinct bird from the 15th century, while also addressing the breeding needs of endangered species through this innovative method.

After nearly two years of research and development, the new design features a rigid titanium lattice and a permeable membrane. This evolution allows for stable embryo growth without the challenges faced egg attempts, which required additional oxygen flow and risks of DNA damage.

While using artificial eggs offers a promising avenue for endangered bird breeding, it highlights the urgency of addressing broader ecological crises. Conservation needs to evolve beyond technology, with a focus on habitat preservation and climate change mitigation to ensure species can thrive in their natural environments.
