Meta’s WhatsApp service has long been a leader in messaging, catering to billions of users worldwide. Recently, the platform implemented strict measures against AI chatbots, imposing a blanket ban in January followed by a usage fee in March.
Now, Meta has shifted its strategy. The company submitted a new proposal to the European Commission, allowing rival AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude limited free access to WhatsApp, up to a specified usage cap.
This change signals Meta’s willingness to adapt to regulatory pressures and competitive demands. The proposal aims to foster collaboration within the AI ecosystem while maintaining a revenue stream once the free limit is surpassed.
The decision could reshape the landscape for AI developers, enabling them to integrate human-like chat functionalities into their offerings. However, it also raises concerns about potential over-dependence on Meta’s platform and its implications for data privacy and user experience.
