Waymo has taken a significant step in its autonomous vehicle program. Until now, its tests involved only employees and limited routes. The company has now announced that it will expand its services to select riders in three major U.S. cities.
The new vehicle, a Zeekr RT minivan renamed Ojai, has undergone extensive testing over the past few months. Waymo officials are confident in its performance and have planned a phased rollout. Initial rides will be offered for free, allowing users to experience the technology firsthand.
In the coming weeks, selected riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix will be able to hail the Ojai through Waymo’s app. The company aims to gather real-world data and feedback during this phase before gradually increasing the number of riders and expanding to additional cities.
This move marks a pivotal moment for Waymo and the autonomous vehicle industry as a whole. If successful, it could pave the way for a broader acceptance of self-driving technology. The implications for urban mobility and transportation models could be profound, potentially reshaping how people navigate these major metropolitan areas.
