After seven long years of navigating the complexities of in vitro fertilization (IVF), designer Şener Besim has taken the significant step of turning to a surrogate to fulfill his dream of parenthood. The decision came after a challenging journey that included numerous medical procedures, emotional ups and downs, and the relentless hope that accompanied each new attempt.
“I never imagined that the path to becoming a parent would be so arduous,” Besim reflects. His passion for his work in the fashion industry is rivaled only desire to start a family. Over the years, he and his partner faced physical, emotional, and financial hurdles that tested their limits. IVF treatments were not only costly but also filled with uncertainty, each cycle bringing its own set of challenges and disappointments.
When traditional methods proved insufficient, Besim found himself discussing alternative options with friends and family. The support he received was invaluable, but it was a conversation with his long-time friend Jo Horgan, founder of the Australian retail brand Mecca, that provided both encouragement and insight. Horgan, who has successfully navigated her own challenges in business and personal life, emphasized the importance of resilience and adaptability.
“Sometimes you must pivot and find new solutions,” Horgan advised. This advice resonated deeply with Besim, who felt empowered to explore surrogacy as a viable option. The decision to pursue a surrogate was not made lightly; it involved extensive research, legal consultations, and emotional preparation, but ultimately, it felt like the right path forward.
As he embarks on this new chapter, Besim expresses a blend of excitement and anxiety. “It’s scary to put your hopes in someone else’s hands,” he admits. However, the prospect of parenthood now feels more tangible, and he remains optimistic. He also emphasizes the significance of open communication with the surrogate, which he believes will be essential for building a trusting relationship.
Besim acknowledges that while every couple’s journey to parenthood is unique, sharing experiences can create a sense of community. He hopes that story, he can inspire those who are facing similar challenges and remind them that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to building a family.
