AMC marks heat hotspots in east

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has identified several heat hotspots in the eastern region of the city as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle rising temperatures and mitigate the impact of urban heat islands. These hotspots are areas where temperatures soar significantly higher than the surrounding environment, posing health risks to residents and exacerbating energy demands.

The initiative comes in response to increasing concerns about climate change and its effects on urban populations, particularly in rapidly growing cities like Ahmedabad. As part of their assessment, AMC deployed mobile temperature sensors to monitor heat levels across different neighborhoods, with an emphasis on both residential and industrial zones.

Preliminary findings indicate that areas with extensive concrete structures and limited green cover are more susceptible to higher temperatures. Additionally, the mapping has highlighted regions where a lack of trees contributes to increased heat retention, intensifying discomfort during peak summer months.

In light of these findings, the AMC has proposed several interventions aimed at reducing heat levels. Plans include the introduction of more greenery in the form of parks and tree plantations, which can serve as natural cooling agents. Furthermore, the corporation is considering the implementation of reflective roofing materials in new constructions to help mitigate heat absorption.

Local residents have welcomed these initiatives, acknowledging the detrimental effects of heat on their daily lives. Many expressed hope that the measures would lead to improved living conditions during the sweltering summer months.

AMC officials stated that they will continue to monitor the situation and gather data to refine their strategies. The corporation aims to involve community participation in these environmental projects, encouraging residents to actively contribute to planting trees and maintaining green spaces.

As Ahmedabad faces the dual challenges of urbanization and climate change, the AMC’s proactive approach to addressing heat hotspots could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar issues.
