In a remarkable display of intelligence, a cow in Austria has demonstrated the ability to use a broom as a scratching tool, a behavior previously attributed only to primates. The findings, published in the journal Current Biology, have captured the attention of scientists and animal behaviorists alike, prompting a reevaluation of the cognitive abilities of farm animals.
The cow, named Veronika, was the subject of an observational study in which researchers monitored her interactions with a broom. Over ten observation sessions, they recorded a total of 76 instances in which Veronika successfully used the broom to scratch various areas of her body that were otherwise inaccessible.
Researchers noted that Veronika adeptly manipulated the broom using her teeth and tongue. For scratching her upper body, she preferred to use the bristled side of the broom, which she found effective for reaching higher and itchier spots. When addressing more sensitive areas, she would skillfully turn the broom around to utilize the smooth end, showcasing her understanding of the tool’s functionality.
This discovery raises intriguing questions about the cognitive capabilities of not just cows but also other animals typically considered to have limited problem-solving skills.
