Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed concerns regarding the impact of ongoing issues with the United States on the recent decision to implement cuts in customs duties. Speaking at a press conference, Sitharaman emphasized that the budgetary measures taken in Union Budget 2026 were not influenced pressures. Instead, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support domestic industries through strategic tax adjustments.
The Finance Minister noted that while international relations can impact various economic aspects, the priority remains on fostering growth at home. “The customs duty cuts are designed to enhance the competitiveness of our local industries without yielding to international pressures,” she stated. Sitharaman’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of strained trade relations and negotiations with the U.S., which have raised questions about the extent of foreign influence on India’s fiscal policies.
In addition to customs duties, Sitharaman introduced a new approach regarding the use of cess proceeds, traditionally a core responsibility of the central government. She revealed that the Centre has begun utilizing these funds for matters that fall under the States’ jurisdiction as well. This shift aims to empower state governments with more financial resources to address local issues effectively.
“The use of cess proceeds is now being aligned with the needs of states, enabling them to undertake critical programs in health, education, and infrastructure,” the Finance Minister explained. This move is seen as a vital step towards promoting cooperative federalism in India, where both the central and state governments play significant roles in governance.
Economists and political analysts have hailed this approach, suggesting that collaboration between the Centre and states will lead to more balanced economic development across the country. However, some state leaders have raised concerns about the potential for the Centre to overreach in state matters, insisting that a clear delineation of responsibilities is crucial for maintaining the integrity of India’s federal structure.
As the government implements these changes, all eyes will be on the outcomes and whether they succeed in bridging the gap between central initiatives and state-level execution. The success of this budget strategy may set a precedence for future fiscal policies and governance in India.
