A tragic avalanche struck the Zoji La area on the Srinagar-Leh highway, claiming the lives of at least five individuals and leaving several others injured. The disaster occurred early on Thursday morning, as heavy snowfall blanketed the region, causing the snow to give way and create a dangerous situation for travelers on the vital route.
Emergency response teams, including police, the army, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), quickly mobilized to carry out rescue operations. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as rescuers worked tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped under the snow. Many of the injured were airlifted to medical facilities for urgent treatment, while others were treated on-site.
The avalanche significantly impacted the Srinagar-Leh highway, leading to its blockage and stranding numerous vehicles. Authorities have advised travelers to avoid the route until conditions improve. The unpredictable weather patterns have raised concerns over further avalanches, prompting officials to monitor the situation closely.
Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, R.K. Mathur, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life, offering his condolences to the families affected . Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh also conveyed his grief, emphasizing the need for safety measures and better preparedness in the face of such natural calamities.
Local residents, who rely on the highway for daily travel and commerce, are now grappling with not only the loss of life but also the disruption of essential services due to the blocked route. As rescuers continue their efforts, the community stands united in support of the victims’ families during this difficult time.
