At 11:38 a.m., millions of viewers watched as NASA’s space shuttle Challenger erupted into a fireball just 73 seconds after liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The explosion claimed the lives of all seven astronauts aboard, including Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher from New Hampshire, who was poised to become the first civilian to teach from space.
