As the Winter Olympic Games approach, set to begin on February 6 in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Russia finds itself in an unprecedented situation with a mere 13 athletes representing the country. This marks a significant decline in participation compared to previous years, with these competitors participating under neutral status, which means they will not be allowed to display the national flag or have the national anthem played during events.
In the sport of figure skating, Russian athletes have faced additional restrictions. Organizers have barred competitors from participating in pairs skating and ice dancing, limiting representation solely to individual events. Thus, only two athletes will compete in figure skating: Adelia Petrosyan and Pyotr Gumenik.
Among the Russian contingent, Petrosyan stands out as a potential medal contender. Under the guidance of renowned coach Eteri Tutberidze, she has garnered attention for her impressive performances. Currently, bookmakers rank her fourth among the top contenders for the gold medal, with formidable opponents such as Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto, and American skaters Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn ahead of her.
The limited participation reflects ongoing tensions in international sports following Russia’s exclusion from many competitions in recent years due to geopolitical issues and doping scandals. As the Games draw near, the focus will be on how these restrictions affect the performance and morale of the athletes who have the opportunity to compete, albeit under challenging circumstances. The world will watch as these 13 athletes strive to make their mark in Milan and Cortina, carrying the hopes of a nation while navigating the complex landscape of international sports diplomacy.
