In a recent rally in Binpur, Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to alter the Indian Constitution through the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Banerjee’s remarks come in the backdrop of a growing debate around the UCC, which seeks to replace personal laws based on the scriptures and customs of each major religious community in India with a common set governing every citizen.
During his address to supporters, Banerjee emphasized that the UCC is not merely a legal reform but an ideological move to impose a single narrative on a diverse nation. He argued that such a policy could undermine the secular fabric of the country, which has historically respected and celebrated its pluralistic society.
The TMC leader contended that the BJP’s intentions are not focused on justice and equality but rather are aimed at consolidating power and controlling the narratives surrounding personal laws. He cautioned that if the UCC is implemented without considering the unique needs and traditions of different communities, it could lead to widespread dissent and division among citizens.
Banerjee also highlighted the importance of preserving India’s cultural and religious diversity, arguing that attempts to standardize personal laws would infringe on the rights of individuals to practice their faith freely. He called on citizens to stand against what he termed “divisive politics” and reiterated the TMC’s commitment to protecting the nation’s constitutional values.
As the political landscape evolves ahead of upcoming elections, Banerjee’s statements reflect the deepening divide between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, particularly in West Bengal, where the TMC continues to challenge the BJP’s influence. The debate surrounding the UCC is expected to remain a contentious issue as various stakeholders voice their opinions on its implications for Indian democracy and social cohesion.
