Around 100 state government health workers protested on Tuesday, March 17, outside the State Health Department in downtown Merida, to denounce precarious working conditions and low wages. The demonstration, organized worker unions, aimed to draw attention to the financial struggles being faced the front lines of the healthcare system.
Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans demanding fair compensation and improved working conditions. Many expressed frustration over years of stagnant salaries that have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. “We are dedicated to our work, often putting our lives at risk, yet we struggle to make ends meet,” said one participant.
Among the grievances highlighted during the protest were insufficient salaries that do not reflect the level of commitment and expertise required in the healthcare profession. Workers emphasized that the current wage structure undermines their ability to provide quality care to patients and puts additional stress on their personal lives.
Union leaders called on the state government to take immediate action to address the wage disparity and improve working conditions. They urged the authorities to recognize the essential role health workers play, especially in light of the ongoing public health challenges.
“The health care of our community depends on us, but we must be able to support ourselves and our families,” said a union representative during the protest. The gathering concluded with a call for an urgent meeting with state officials to discuss the workers’ demands and seek a feasible resolution.
The protest in Merida is part of a broader trend in Mexico, where health workers across various states have been voicing similar concerns regarding wages and working conditions. As the demand for healthcare services continues to rise, the need for fair compensation for health workers becomes increasingly critical.
