AI-driven Disinformation, Logistic Deficit, Others Are Threat to 2027, Says Amupitan

Published on March 27, 2026

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has highlighted a complex set of challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral landscape as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. According to Amupitan, the nation is grappling with a “sophisticated triad” of electoral issues, with a particular emphasis on the increasing prevalence of AI-driven disinformation, logistic deficits, and the growing volatility of social media.

In recent remarks made in Abuja, Amupitan pointed out that the convergence of these factors presents a significant threat to the integrity and credibility of the electoral process. He underscored the role of social media as a double-edged sword, where it can serve as a platform for genuine civic engagement but also be exploited to spread false narratives and misinformation.

The rise of AI-generated content is a growing concern, as it can easily manipulate public opinion and distort the truth. Amupitan called for urgent measures to combat the spread of disinformation, stressing the need for regulatory frameworks that can keep pace with technological advancements. He urged stakeholders to collaborate in identifying and mitigating the risks associated with the misuse of these digital tools.

Amupitan also addressed logistical challenges that have historically plagued Nigeria’s electoral process. Inadequate planning, resource shortages, and infrastructural deficits have contributed to the inefficiencies witnessed in past elections. He emphasized that addressing these logistical issues is vital for ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the INEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to enhancing the electoral system. He called upon political parties, civil society organizations, and the general public to engage in constructive dialogue and proactive measures to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

With the right strategies and collective effort, Amupitan is optimistic that Nigeria can navigate these challenges and uphold the democratic values that are essential for the nation’s progress.
