What better way to travel in Scandinavia than onboard a boat with beloved characters like Moomintroll, Snufkin, Little My, and Stinky? This was the delightful experience my husband, our children, and I enjoyed while traveling from Sweden to Finland. The Finnish cruise company Silja offers a unique Moomin-themed ferry that operates between Helsinki and Stockholm, and it certainly adds an extra layer of magic to family travel.
As we boarded the M/S Silja Symphony, we were greeted that pay homage to Tove Jansson’s iconic Moomin characters. The ship is adorned with vibrant artwork and playful installations that brought smiles to our faces, instantly creating a whimsical atmosphere. Our children were particularly excited to see their favorite characters come to life, making it feel as if we had stepped into one of the beloved Moomin stories.

We savored traditional rye bread and salmon, while the kids enjoyed Moomin-shaped pancakes that were as delightful to look at as they were to eat. The dining experience was enhanced of the archipelago, making every meal a picturesque affair.
As evening approached, the ship transformed into a cozy haven for relaxation. Families settled into lounges for movie screenings featuring Moomin tales, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. The ship’s shops were stocked with Moomin merchandise, including plush toys, books, and souvenirs, making it easy to take a piece of the adventure home.
Cruising across the tranquil waters of the Baltic Sea, we were treated to breathtaking vistas of islands and seascapes, making this journey truly unforgettable. The attentive staff ensured that our experience was comfortable, providing exceptional service that made every moment enjoyable.
As we neared Stockholm, I couldn’t help but reflect on how this journey had deepened our family’s connection, not only with each other but also with the beloved Moomin stories that transcended generations. The Moomin ferry wasn’t just a mode of transportation; it was a magical experience that created lasting memories for us all.
As we disembarked in Stockholm, our hearts were filled with joy, and our minds were brimming with stories and laughter. The Moomin ferry adventure with Silja is an excellent way to explore the beauty of Scandinavia, and it is undoubtedly a journey that families will cherish for years to come.
