I always enjoy trying a watch brand I haven’t worn before. I’ve known and admired Bell & Ross’s timepieces from afar, so I was pleased to borrow one of their Vintage Collection to try for a few days.
Bell & Ross was founded in 1992 to make robust watches for professionals such as pilots, divers, and military personnel. They became known for their square watches, based on airliner cockpit instrumentation. The brand has supplied the French Air Force and motor racing teams, as well as offering timepieces for everyday consumers. Notably, their watches are crafted in Switzerland.
I tried the Bell & Ross BR V2-92 Aéronavale, a 41mm automatic mechanical watch featuring a stunning deep blue sunray dial. The watch boasts a bi-directional rotating bezel, a depth rating of 100 meters, a screw-down crown, and a transparent case back that showcases the movement. Its design channels a distinct vintage pilot’s watch vibe, providing a significant presence on the wrist—especially when paired with the matching deep blue calfskin strap, although it is also available with a steel bracelet.
The clean aesthetics provide a contemporary feel, and while the Sellita-based movement does not have claims to be chronograph tested, it kept remarkably good time during the days I wore it. Priced at £2700 with the leather strap, this watch represents fair value and fits well into a stylish wardrobe, complementing both casual outfits like jeans and knitwear as well as formal attire like a suit and tie. Overall, it is a practical and handsome timepiece that effortlessly bridges function and style.
